Synopsis of Leaving (Short story written by M.G Vassanji)

 Synopsis  

A woman raises 5 children by herself after the death of her husband.

She focuses on the two younger ones, Aloo and the narrator. 

She pins all her hopes that they will have a better education 

Aloo is in his final year in school and wants to study medicine. 

Mr Datoo, a former teacher inspires Aloo to think of furthering his education in America so he starts writing to american universities to get necessary information. 

He is offered a place with a scholarship in the California Institute of Technology. However, his mother would not allow him to accept the offer due to financial issues and fear of losing her son. He is not keen on studying agriculture in a local university. Finally, on the advice of a school officer Mr Velnji, his mother accepts the idea of allowing Aloo to leave home and study abroad.  The narrator, for the first time sees her mother as a person. Aloo's first letter was a graphic enthusiastic account of London but to the mother, she is uncertain of his return.
